PopularWhat are ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT Ads are OpenAI's native advertising product inside ChatGPT: labelled sponsored cards that appear below a relevant response, governed by a principle OpenAI calls answer independence — the ad cannot change the answer.
What ChatGPT Ads are
ChatGPT Ads are the first advertising product built at scale on a general-purpose AI assistant. A sponsored card renders beneath the assistant's response when the conversation reaches a point where a commercial suggestion is genuinely relevant. The card is labelled, visually separated from the answer, and does not interrupt the flow of the conversation.
The governing constraint is answer independence: the presence of an advertiser does not influence what the model says. The answer is produced first; the placement is matched to it afterwards. This is the opposite of the search model, where paid results sit above organic ones and compete with them for the same click.
Why the format is built this way
An assistant's value rests entirely on the user believing the answer is not for sale. Any format that let a bid change the response would destroy the product it is monetising, which is why the separation is architectural rather than a policy that could be relaxed later.
It has commercial consequences. Inventory is scarce, because most conversations never reach a moment where a paid suggestion helps. Relevance thresholds are high. And brand safety is enforced before the auction rather than measured after it, because a badly-placed ad in a conversation is far more damaging than a badly-placed banner.
How buying access works today
Direct access to OpenAI's own inventory is limited, and for most advertisers the practical route is an independent platform that reaches ChatGPT and comparable assistants. We have written the current state of access up in detail:

ChatGPT Ads vs search ads
The two look similar — a commercial result beside an informational one — and behave differently in three ways that matter to a media plan.
Intent arrives fuller. A search query is two or three words. A conversation has already established the constraint, the budget and the use case before the placement appears, so targeting works on stated intent rather than inferred intent.
Volume is far lower. Only a fraction of conversations are commercially relevant, and only one placement renders. Planning against search-scale impression volumes will not survive contact with the surface.
The click is not the whole event. A user may act on a recommendation without clicking it, which makes last-click measurement systematically understate performance. Measuring honestly means accepting incrementality and assisted conversions as primary rather than supplementary.
Common questions
Can advertisers influence what ChatGPT says about them?
No. Answer independence means the response is generated before any placement is matched to it. Influencing what an assistant says organically is a different discipline — see GEO / AEO.
How much do ChatGPT Ads cost?
Pricing is CPM- and CPC-based and clears higher than comparable display inventory because supply is deliberately scarce. Our cost breakdown covers the current benchmarks and what drives them.
Is there a waitlist?
OpenAI has run limited-access programmes rather than open self-serve. Independent platforms that reach ChatGPT alongside other assistants are generally available now, which is how most advertisers are buying the surface today.
