What is an AI ad network?

An AI ad network aggregates advertising inventory across multiple AI surfaces — chat assistants, AI-enhanced search, AI-native apps — and presents it to advertisers through a single buying interface.

The problem an AI ad network solves

AI inventory is fragmented in a way display inventory never was. A handful of large assistants hold most of the attention, and beneath them sit thousands of AI-native applications — writing tools, tutors, research assistants, shopping agents — each with a small but highly intentional audience.

No advertiser is going to integrate with those individually. A network aggregates them: one contract, one creative specification, one set of controls, one report. That is the same value proposition an ad network offered in the display era, applied to a supply base that is younger and more heterogeneous.

What it has to normalise

Aggregating conversational supply is harder than aggregating banner slots, because the surfaces genuinely differ.

  • Format. A sponsored card under an answer, an inline recommendation, a sponsored follow-up — the same campaign has to render natively in each.
  • Context signalling. Each publisher describes the conversation differently; the network has to reduce that to a comparable measure of intent density.
  • Eligibility rules. Which conversations may carry advertising at all differs by publisher, and the network enforces the union of its own rules and theirs.
  • Measurement. A single count of delivery and outcome across surfaces that log differently.

How it differs from a display ad network

Two differences matter commercially.

Supply is scarce on purpose. A display network's inventory grows with pageviews. An AI network's inventory is capped by how many conversations reach a commercially relevant moment, and publishers deliberately keep the ratio low to protect the experience. Volume forecasts built on display intuitions will be wrong by an order of magnitude.

Targeting is contextual by construction. There is no cross-surface identity to buy against, so the network sells against what the user is currently trying to do rather than who they are. That makes it durable under privacy regulation, and it makes audience-first media plans hard to translate directly.

AI ad network, AI DSP or direct?

A network is the fastest route to reach across many surfaces with one integration, and the right default for most advertisers today. An AI DSP gives finer control over bidding and optimisation and expects more operating capability from the buyer. Direct deals with a single large assistant give the best terms on that surface and no reach beyond it. Our comparison of chatbot ad networks sets out the trade-offs in more detail.

Common questions

Can I reach ChatGPT through an AI ad network?

Some networks reach ChatGPT alongside other assistants; direct access from OpenAI has been limited. Our guide to buying ChatGPT ads without a direct OpenAI deal covers the current routes.

What does AI network inventory cost?

It clears above comparable display CPMs because supply is deliberately constrained and intent is higher. Our pricing page sets out the models available.
