What is the post-click ad economy?

The post-click ad economy is the thesis that as user activity moves into AI assistants, the click loses its central role as the unit of advertising value — replaced by mentions, citations, agent-completed actions and inclusion in AI recommendations.

The argument

The click became the unit of digital advertising for a practical reason rather than a principled one: it was the thing that could be counted. It was never a good proxy for value — clicks are cheap, frequently accidental, and only loosely related to purchase — but it was measurable, and everything got built around it.

Assistants remove the click without removing the influence. A user asks for a recommendation, receives one, and acts on it. They may search for the brand later, walk into a shop, or have an agent complete the purchase. The influence was real and there is no click anywhere in it.

The thesis is that this is not an edge case to be measured around but the emerging default for a growing share of commercial decisions.

What replaces the click

  • [Answer insertion](/resources/glossary/answer-insertion). Being named at all — the closest thing to an impression on this surface.
  • Citation. Being used as a source, with the implied credibility that carries.
  • [Agentic conversion](/resources/glossary/agentic-conversion). An outcome an agent completed, with no session at any point.
  • [AI share of voice](/resources/glossary/ai-share-of-voice-ai-sov). Presence across a category's answers, tracked over time.

What to do about it now

Two things, neither of which requires believing the strong version of the thesis.

Stop treating unattributed conversions as a tracking failure. The rise in direct and organic that most brands have seen is partly real influence arriving without a referrer. Trying to close that gap with better instrumentation chases something that is not there.

Build the causal read now. A holdout costs a little revenue and answers the question every other instrument is guessing at. If AI-driven influence is growing, an organisation with a working incrementality practice will see it and one relying on last click will conclude the channel does nothing — see measuring AI assistant ad performance honestly.

The honest caveat

The click is not going away soon. Most digital advertising still runs on it, it still works, and most conversions still involve one. The thesis is about direction and about a growing minority, not about a switch that has already flipped.

The failure mode worth avoiding is the opposite of complacency: abandoning click-based measurement early on the strength of a forecast. The right position is to keep it, stop over-trusting it, and add the instrument that reads what it cannot see.

Common questions

Is the click really dying?

Not dying — losing its monopoly. It remains the dominant measured unit and is becoming a progressively less complete one, which is a different and more manageable problem.

How do I value a mention against a click?

Not by conversion rate, which will always favour the click. The workable approach is a holdout that measures total outcome lift from AI presence, then divides by the exposure to get an implied value.
