Conversational Advertising

What Is Conversational Advertising?

Ads placed inside live AI conversations — contextual, intent-based, and always clearly labeled. Here's how the category works, how it's being regulated, and where Thrad fits.

For Advertisers

Be the answer inside AI conversations

Reach people while they're mid-decision, matched to what they're actually asking, across the AI apps and chatbots your customers already use.

For Publishers

Monetize your chat interface without breaking trust

Native, contextual ads that stay clearly labeled and never interfere with the AI's own answer.

How it Works

Why conversational advertising is becoming its own category

AI conversations are quickly becoming a default first stop for research and recommendations — not inside one assistant, but across a growing list of them: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and a wave of purpose-built AI apps. Each is starting to open a version of this same question: what does it look like to advertise inside a conversation, rather than around one?

The industry is moving to answer it. On August 18, 2026, IAB published its AI Transparency & Disclosure Framework V2, a risk-based, materiality-driven standard for when and how AI involvement should be disclosed across advertising and marketing — covering AI-generated text, imagery, video, audio, synthetic voices, digital twins, and AI-powered consumer interactions. It lands alongside a wave of new law: New York's synthetic performer disclosure law took effect in June 2026, California's SB 942 on August 2, and Article 50 of the EU AI Act the same day. The regulatory direction is clear. What's still missing is a standard built specifically for an ad served inside a live AI conversation — not a synthetic image, not a generated video, but a sponsored placement sitting next to an AI's own answer, in real time.

That's the gap conversational advertising sits in, and the gap Thrad was built around: advertising infrastructure for AI conversations — a combined demand- and supply-side platform connecting brands to AI apps and chatbots through contextual, intent-based ads, always clearly labeled as sponsored and withheld from sensitive conversations. As Thrad CEO Andrea Tortella has put it, the goal is "aggregating conversational surfaces wherever they may be across the internet, across the walled gardens, across the long tail."

  • Read the conversation

Conversational advertising starts with what's actually being discussed right now: the question someone just asked, the intent behind it, the context of the conversation so far — not a static keyword or a demographic segment.

  • Match with sponsored intelligence

A relevant, labeled placement is matched to that moment in real time. Thrad calls this sponsored intelligence: a recommendation delivered with the same context and timing as the AI's own advice, while staying honestly, visibly separate from it.

  • Label it, always

Every placement is disclosed as sponsored and withheld from sensitive conversations, by default — not as an afterthought once regulation catches up, but as the baseline the category needs to earn trust.

Common questions

Conversational advertising, explained

What is conversational advertising?

Conversational advertising is advertising placed inside a live AI or chat interface — a conversation with an LLM, a chatbot, an AI search assistant — rather than on a static page or in a social feed. The ad is matched to what's actually being discussed, in real time, and shown as a clearly labeled sponsored element alongside (not inside) the AI's own response. It's a different surface from search, display, and social because the "page" is a private, dynamic conversation that's different every time it happens.

How is conversational advertising different from "ChatGPT ads" specifically?

ChatGPT ads are one implementation of conversational advertising — OpenAI's own ad product inside ChatGPT. Conversational advertising is the broader category: any AI app or chatbot where a brand can appear inside the conversation itself, across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and the growing list of independent AI apps. Thrad connects brands to that whole surface, not just one assistant.

What does Thrad mean by "sponsored intelligence"?

It's the difference between an ad that interrupts and one that's actually useful in the moment. A labeled, contextual placement inside an AI conversation can carry the same relevance and timing as the AI's own recommendation — sponsored intelligence is that idea: advertising that earns its place in the conversation by being genuinely relevant, while staying clearly, honestly marked as paid.

How is conversational advertising disclosed to users?

IAB's AI Transparency & Disclosure Framework V2 (Aug 18, 2026) sets out a risk-based approach to AI disclosure broadly, including "AI-powered consumer interactions," but it doesn't yet define a disclosure standard built specifically for an ad served inside a live AI conversation — that's still an open question the industry is working through. Thrad's own standard doesn't wait for that to be finalized: every placement is labeled as sponsored, and ads are withheld entirely from sensitive conversations.

What's next for conversational advertising?

IAB's disclosure framework goes through another round of industry input at its October 28, 2026 workshop, and more assistants beyond ChatGPT are expected to roll out their own ad models over the next year — each will face the same context-matching and disclosure questions ChatGPT is working through today. Thrad's bet is that brands won't want to solve this platform by platform: the DSP layer for AI conversations needs to work across all of them, not just one.
