Claude Ads: Why There Aren't Any, What the Super Bowl Campaign Said, and Where to Advertise Instead

Claude has no ads: Anthropic pledged it on February 4, 2026 and made it a Super Bowl campaign. What that means for advertisers, and which AI assistants do sell placements.

"Claude ads" means two things in 2026. One is the question advertisers ask: does Claude carry ads, and can I buy them? The answer is no, on Anthropic's own word. The other is the Super Bowl campaign in which Anthropic made that promise into a punchline. This piece covers both from the primary sources, then the part that matters if you are the advertiser: where you can buy placements inside AI conversations instead.

Does Claude have ads?

No. On February 4, 2026, Anthropic published a post titled Claude is a space to think that says: "So we've made a choice: Claude will remain ad-free." The reasoning is that "users shouldn't have to second-guess whether an AI is genuinely helping them," and that "there are many good places for advertising. A conversation with Claude is not one of them." Anthropic says its revenue comes from "enterprise contracts and paid subscriptions," and that users will not see sponsored links beside their chats.

The post includes one caveat worth noting: if Anthropic changes course, "we'll be transparent about our reasons for doing so." As of October 16, 2026 there is no Claude ads product, no ads manager, and no announced plan for one.

What was the Claude Super Bowl campaign?

The same day, Anthropic released "A Time and a Place," its first major brand campaign, made with the agency Mother. Coverage of the launch describes four spots, each opening with a word like "betrayal" or "deception" and showing an AI helper abandoning real advice for a product pitch mid-conversation: a fitness bot that turns to insoles, a therapist bot that turns to a dating service. The tagline: "Ads are coming to AI. But not to Claude." Two of the spots aired during Super Bowl LX, and Anthropic estimated the TV audience at around 120 million people.

OpenAI, whose ads in ChatGPT had begun testing days earlier, answered. Sam Altman wrote on X that the ads were "funny, and I laughed," but asked "why Anthropic would go for something so clearly dishonest." OpenAI's position, in its help center, is that ads appear below the end of a response, are labeled as sponsored, and do not influence what ChatGPT says. We have no stake in that dispute. What the exchange established is the rule every serious seller of AI placements now states: the ad is separate from the answer, and it is labeled.

Can you advertise on Claude?

Not through Anthropic. There is no placement to buy, no account to open, and no agency or platform that can put a sponsored message inside a Claude conversation. If a vendor offers "Claude ads," ask what they mean; usually it is either advertising elsewhere to people who use Claude, or organic work aimed at getting cited when Claude searches the web.

That second route exists, and it is the only one. When Claude uses web search, it can cite your pages, which is the same answer engine optimization work that applies to every assistant: crawlable pages, direct answers, sources. It is earned, slow and unguaranteed, and it is not advertising.

Where can you advertise inside AI conversations instead?

Four sellers document a live product, and three well-known assistants sell nothing. Our AI advertising platform guide and our comparison of which assistants sell ads cover each in detail.

What should advertisers take from this?

  • Claude's audience is reachable, Claude is not. The people who pay for Claude also use other assistants, search engines and AI apps. Plan presence where ads are sold rather than waiting for a product Anthropic says is not coming.
  • Labeling is the norm, not the exception. Anthropic's campaign dramatized ads disguised as advice. The sellers that exist label placements as sponsored and keep them separate from the answer, which is also how Thrad places ads inside conversations.
  • Buy across apps, not one app. One assistant's policy can change, as Anthropic's own caveat admits. Thrad lets you run one budget across the AI apps your customers already use. Launch a campaign from self-serve.
  • Keep the organic lane open. Claude, Gemini and Perplexity can all cite you when they search. That is worth doing and separate from media spend.
