Chat with Meta AI about hiking, Meta says, and you may start seeing ads for hiking boots. Not in the chat — in your Facebook and Instagram feeds. That example, from Meta's own announcement, explains most of what "Meta AI ads" means today, and what it does not.
The phrase gets used for several different things: Meta using AI conversations to target ads, Meta's AI tools for running campaigns, and businesses running AI agents in WhatsApp and Messenger. This guide separates them using Meta's newsroom and its 2026 earnings calls, then covers where advertisers can buy placements inside AI conversations.
What does "Meta AI ads" actually mean?
| What it is | For advertisers | |
|---|---|---|
| AI chats as a signal | Chats shape ad targeting | Nothing to set up |
| AI ad tools | AI inside Ads Manager | Setup and insights |
| Business AIs | Brand agents in chats | WhatsApp and Messenger |
| Ads inside Meta AI | Not announced | No placement to buy |
How does Meta use AI conversations for ads?
Since December 16, 2025, Meta has used people's interactions with its AI features to personalize the content and ads they see across its apps. Meta says more than a billion people use Meta AI every month, so this is a large new source of interest signals. Meta describes it the same way it describes a like or a post: if you chat with Meta AI about hiking, "we may learn that you're interested in hiking."
Three limits come from the same announcement:
- Sensitive topics are excluded. Conversations about religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs or trade union membership are not used to show ads.
- Accounts Center decides the reach. Meta AI chats on WhatsApp only inform ads elsewhere if the WhatsApp account has been added to the same Accounts Center.
- Rollout is regional. Meta says it is rolling the change out in most regions.
The flow now runs both ways. In June 2026 Meta said it would also use information businesses already share with it — the site and app activity behind ad measurement — to personalize Feed and AI responses as well as ads. The user setting that controls this was renamed "Activity from other businesses."
Not every Meta AI product feeds the ad system. Meta says its Muse personal agent "doesn't share a person's conversations or the data in their VM with Meta's ad systems," and in its Q2 2026 earnings call it described an incognito mode on WhatsApp and the Meta AI app for private conversations "that even Meta can't see."
For advertisers, the practical point is that there is no "Meta AI" audience to select. Meta presents chats as one more signal in the personalization it already runs, alongside likes, follows and views.
What AI tools does Meta give advertisers?
The second meaning is Meta's AI for running campaigns. In its Q1 2026 earnings call, Meta said the Meta AI business assistant had been "fully rolled out to all eligible advertisers on supported Meta buying surfaces," offering personalized recommendations, resolving account issues and surfacing campaign insights. These tools change how you buy Meta's existing inventory — Feed, Reels, Stories — not where your ads appear.
What are Meta's Business AIs?
The third meaning is businesses running AI agents that talk to customers in Meta's messaging apps. Meta said in its Q1 call that more than 10 million conversations a week were being handled by Business AIs, up from 1 million at the start of the year, after expanding them on WhatsApp to small businesses in Latin America and Indonesia and on Messenger in Asia-Pacific. It also said they are "currently free for most businesses."
Business AIs are a customer-service and sales channel you run, not paid media. On monetization, Meta said in Q2 that it has "a mix of subscriptions, volume-based pricing," and expects more products to work like its ad systems, where businesses pay for results.
Can you buy ads inside Meta AI?
Not as of October 2026. Meta's newsroom announcements and its Q1 and Q2 2026 earnings calls describe Meta AI chats as a signal for targeting and Business AIs as a priced product, but no way for advertisers to buy a placement that appears inside a Meta AI conversation. Facebook's new AI Mode, launched in June 2026, gives answers grounded in what people share publicly across Meta's apps; its announcement does not mention ads.
That makes Meta AI different from assistants that already sell placements in the conversation itself. Our comparison of which AI assistants sell ads covers the current state of each.
Where can you advertise inside AI conversations today?
Many of the advertisers we speak with already put most of their budget into Meta and Google, and come to AI conversations looking for a channel that is less crowded. That channel works differently from Meta's use of AI chats. Instead of a chat informing an ad that runs later somewhere else, the placement appears in the conversation, at the moment someone is asking for a recommendation.
Thrad lets you run one budget across the AI apps your customers already use. Launch a campaign from self-serve, or read our overview of conversational advertising first.
What should Meta advertisers do now?
- Expect no new setting: AI-chat signals arrive through Meta's existing delivery, not a new targeting option.
- Keep the conversion and site-activity data you share with Meta accurate, since it now shapes AI responses as well as ads.
- Plan around the excluded sensitive topics; health and similar categories do not gain targeting from Meta AI chats.
- Treat Business AIs as a messaging channel to staff and measure, not as media spend.
- Test placements inside AI conversations as their own channel, with their own measurement, rather than waiting for Meta AI to carry ads.
- Watch Meta's newsroom and quarterly calls; Meta's description of AI monetization is still changing.
Common questions
- Are there ads in Meta AI?
As of October 2026, Meta has not announced a way for advertisers to buy ads that appear inside Meta AI conversations. Meta uses Meta AI chats as a signal to personalize ads shown elsewhere on its apps.
- Does Meta use my Meta AI chats to show me ads?
Yes. Since December 16, 2025, Meta has used interactions with its AI features to personalize content and ads, in most regions. Conversations about sensitive topics such as health, religion or politics are not used for ads.
- Can advertisers target people based on what they asked Meta AI?
Meta does not describe a targeting option for it. It presents AI chats as one more signal in its personalization, alongside likes, follows and views.
- Do WhatsApp chats with Meta AI affect ads on Instagram?
Only if the WhatsApp account has been added to the same Accounts Center. Meta says otherwise those interactions are not used to personalize experiences across accounts.
- What are Business AIs on WhatsApp and Messenger?
AI agents that businesses run to talk with customers in Meta's messaging apps. Meta reported more than 10 million weekly Business AI conversations in early 2026 and said they are currently free for most businesses.
- Does Facebook's AI Mode show ads?
Meta's June 2026 announcement describes AI Mode as a search tab that answers questions using what people share publicly across its apps. It does not mention ads.
