A digital advertising platform is where you buy ads: you set a budget, choose who to reach, and the platform runs an auction for each impression or click. Three of them take most of the money. EMARKETER expects Meta, Google and Amazon to hold 62.3 percent of worldwide digital ad spending in 2026. The rest of the market is a long list of platforms, each built on a different signal: what people search for, who they follow, what they buy, where they work, and now what they ask an AI assistant.
This guide compares fourteen platforms on the facts each one publishes about itself: what it targets on, how it charges, its reach and its minimum budget. It then covers where costs are heading and where the next dollar of budget is likely to work hardest. Thrad is one of the fourteen, as the platform for ads inside AI conversations; everything else here is the platforms' own documentation.
The fourteen platforms at a glance
Every platform sells attention, but each one knows something different about the person it shows the ad to. That signal decides what the platform is good for.

What each type of platform is good for
Grouped by the job they do, the fourteen collapse into five kinds:
- Demand capture: Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Apple. The person has already said what they want by typing it. These platforms convert best and cost the most per click, because every competitor bids on the same words.
- Demand creation: Meta, TikTok, Snapchat, Pinterest, Reddit, X. The platform finds people likely to want something before they ask. Cheaper reach, longer path to purchase, and creative does most of the work.
- Professional targeting: LinkedIn. The only platform that targets on job title and company. Expensive per click and unmatched for B2B.
- Open web: The Trade Desk and other DSPs. One buy across thousands of publishers, connected TV and audio. Our programmatic platforms guide compares them.
- Conversation intent: OpenAI Ads Manager, Copilot, Thrad. The person states a need in their own words to an AI assistant, and the ad appears beside the answer. This is the newest category, and the only one besides search that sees the need in the person's own words.

Book a callWhere costs are heading
The established platforms are getting more expensive, and search is sending fewer clicks per query:
| Measure | Change | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Google Ads average CPC | $2.32 in 2016 to $5.42 in 2026 | WordStream |
| Meta average price per ad | Up 12% year over year | Meta, Q2 2026 |
| Google Search cost per click | Up 3% year over year | Alphabet, Q2 2026 |
| Clicks with an AI summary | 8% of visits vs 15% | Pew Research |
| Paid CTR, AI Overview queries | 19.7% to 6.3% | Seer Interactive |
WordStream's 2026 benchmarks put the average Google Ads cost per click at $5.42, against $2.32 a decade ago. Meta reported that its average price per ad rose 12 percent year over year in the second quarter of 2026, and Alphabet's quarterly filing shows Search cost per click up 3 percent. Meanwhile AI summaries are absorbing clicks: Pew Research found people clicked a traditional result in 8 percent of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15 percent without one; Ahrefs measured a 58 percent lower click-through rate for the top result; and Seer Interactive saw paid click-through on those queries fall from 19.7 to 6.3 percent.
None of this means search or social stop working. It means each additional dollar there buys a little less, and the questions people used to type into a search box are increasingly asked to an assistant instead.
The channel most platform lists leave out
Ads inside AI conversations became a real budget line in 2026. OpenAI said in August that ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion annualized run rate in under 200 days, and that ChatGPT has more than a billion weekly users. Microsoft serves existing campaigns inside Copilot. EMARKETER still expects AI search to be 1.3 percent of US search ad spending in 2026, which is the opportunity in one number: the attention has moved faster than the budgets.
What makes the channel different is the signal. A search query is three or four words. A question to an assistant is a sentence with context: who it is for, what the budget is, what was tried already. An ad matched to that sentence, labeled as sponsored and shown beside the answer, reaches someone in the middle of a decision. Our AI advertising platform guide covers every seller in the category, and our comparisons with Google Ads and Meta work through when to shift budget and how much.
Thrad is the platform for that channel beyond any single assistant. Thrad is a DSP for ads inside AI conversations: advertisers bid on conversational intent in real time, with delivery in under 500 milliseconds, across 20+ countries, with one budget and one report across every AI app. Campaigns launch from the self-serve platform with CPC or CPM pricing, full control, and no minimum spend. Launch a campaign from self-serve.
How to choose a platform, and how to test a new one
- Start from the signal you need. If buyers search for your category, start with search. If they need to discover it, start with social. If they ask for advice before buying, conversation ads belong in the plan.
- Check the floor before the reach. TikTok needs $50 a day per campaign; LinkedIn $10; OpenAI $25; Snapchat $5; several have none. A platform you cannot fund for four weeks is not a test.
- Compare on cost per outcome, not per click. A $5 click that converts beats a $1 click that does not. Set the same conversion event on every platform.
- Move budget in steps. Take 10 to 15 percent from your most saturated channel, run the new platform for four to six weeks against a holdout, and scale only what beats the channel it came from.
- Report in one place. Every platform grades its own homework. Use your own analytics as the referee.
