AI Advertising Agencies: The Two Kinds, What They Charge, and When You Can Skip One

"AI advertising agency" is sold two ways. Most agencies that rank for the phrase use AI to run your Google and Meta campaigns. A smaller group buys ads inside AI conversations, in ChatGPT and other assistants, which is new inventory rather than a new way of buying old inventory. The two charge differently, deliver differently, and are evaluated differently.

Where we stand: Thrad is not an agency. We are the platform brands and agencies use to buy sponsored placements inside AI conversations, with a self-serve version and an agency workspace. This guide covers both kinds of agency, the fees that are actually published, and the questions that separate an AI practice from a rebranded PPC retainer.

What is an AI advertising agency?

One definition that ranks for the term says an AI marketing agency "integrates artificial intelligence into every stage of marketing" and uses "algorithms, predictive analytics, and automation" in place of instinct. That describes kind one. Kind two is defined by where the ads run, not by how they are bought:

Kind one: agencies that use AI to run your existing ads

These agencies sell predictive audiences, automated bidding and generated creative on Google, Meta, Amazon and programmatic. Much of that is now built into the platforms: Google describes Performance Max as a campaign type where "Google AI mixes and matches these assets to render tailored ads across all inventory," and Meta's Advantage+ and Ads Manager assistant do the same job. The agency's value is strategy, creative volume and operations, not access to AI.

Before paying a premium, ask which AI the agency brings that the platform does not. One pricing guide reports that "AI-powered SEO or content services typically command 20–50% higher rates than their manual counterparts." If the answer is a vendor tool you could license yourself, the premium is for operations and should be priced as operations.

Kind two: agencies that buy ads inside AI conversations

The second kind manages campaigns on platforms that sell placements inside AI assistants. The inventory is documented: OpenAI Ads Manager is self-serve, bills on impressions or valid clicks through a relevance-weighted second-price auction, and recommends starting CPC bids of $3 to $5; Microsoft serves eligible existing campaigns inside Copilot with no Copilot-specific reporting; Thrad sells placements across independent AI apps. Our AI advertising platform guide maps every seller.

What a ChatGPT ads agency does, in its own words, is account setup, ad creation, testing strategy, budget management and performance optimization. Primer, one of the few that publishes prices, says its "monthly retainers for ChatGPT ads start at $5,000 and scale based on complexity, spend level, and testing velocity," and claims no ChatGPT-specific results yet. The skill that matters here is writing placements that read as useful inside a conversation, and building a test plan around what people ask rather than what they type into a search box. Our ChatGPT advertising guide covers the mechanics an agency would run for you.

What do AI advertising agencies charge?

Paid-media fees are well documented; the AI label mostly adds a premium on top. Figures below are as published on October 15, 2026:

Swydo's 2026 agency pricing survey puts paid-media retainers at roughly $1,500 to $10,000 a month, with percent-of-spend fees falling from 20 to 30 percent under $5,000 of monthly spend to 10 to 15 percent above $50,000. It notes that "the industry standard is often called the 80/20 rule: 80% to ad spend, 20% to the fee," that "most agencies maintain $1,000–$5,000 monthly minimums regardless of ad spend level," and that "setup fees typically range $500–$3,500 as a one-time charge." Digital Agency Network reports AI agency retainers of "$2,000 to $20,000+, with the average around $3,200 /mo."

Hold those against the platform side. OpenAI's self-serve product has no agency in the loop, and Thrad's self-serve platform has no minimum spend and takes a campaign from idea to live in under a minute. A $5,000 retainer on a $5,000 test budget doubles the cost of finding out whether the channel works for you.

What should you ask before signing?

  1. Which AI assistants and apps can you actually buy placements in, and through which accounts or platforms?
  2. What does "AI" mean in your offer: a tool you license, the platform's own automation, or a model you built?
  3. Show me a live placement inside a conversation, and the creative process behind it.
  4. What is the fee model, the minimum term, and what happens to the account and data if we leave?
  5. What reporting will I see, and will it join my own analytics or stay in your dashboard?
  6. Which of your case studies are from AI-conversation placements, and which are from search and social?
  7. Who else on your client list competes with us in the same conversations?

Treat agency rankings with care: the lists that rank for "AI advertising agency" are published by vendors and often include the publisher's own partners. A named client and a channel-specific result beat a composite score.

When do you need an agency, and when don't you?

You probably do not need one to test ads inside AI conversations. The platforms are self-serve, the budgets to start are small, and the first job is learning which conversations convert for you, which is cheaper to learn directly. You probably do need one when you run several brands or markets, when creative volume outgrows your team, or when nobody in-house owns paid media at all. In between, a fixed-fee setup and a 90-day test plan costs less than a retainer and tells you whether the retainer is worth it.

Where Thrad fits

For brands, Thrad is the direct route: sponsored placements inside AI conversations from a self-serve platform, with no minimum spend. Thrad lets you run one budget across the AI apps your customers already use. Launch a campaign from self-serve.

For agencies, Thrad is the platform to buy on rather than a competitor. Agencies manage multiple client accounts on Thrad from one workspace, with shared live reporting their clients can see. Read about the agency workspace.

An AI advertising agency checklist

  1. Decide which kind you are hiring: AI on your existing channels, or placements inside AI conversations.
  2. Run a self-serve test first so you know the channel's numbers before an agency quotes against them.
  3. Compare fees against the published benchmarks, and price the AI premium as operations.
  4. Require a live placement example, a channel-specific case study and reporting you own.
  5. Start fixed-fee and time-boxed; move to a retainer when the test shows movement.

Common questions

What is an AI advertising agency?

Either an agency that uses AI tools to plan, create and optimize ads on channels like Google and Meta, or an agency that buys ad placements inside AI assistants and AI apps such as ChatGPT and Copilot. The first automates existing reach; the second buys new reach.

What is a ChatGPT ads agency?

An agency that sets up and manages campaigns in OpenAI Ads Manager: account setup, creative, testing, budgets and optimization. Primer, one of the few publishing prices, starts retainers at $5,000 a month. The platform itself is self-serve.

How much does an AI advertising agency cost?

Published benchmarks as of October 2026: paid-media retainers of $1,500 to $10,000 a month or 10 to 30 percent of spend, minimums of $1,000 to $5,000, setup fees of $500 to $3,500, and AI agency retainers averaging about $3,200 a month.

Do I need an agency to advertise in AI conversations?

No. OpenAI Ads Manager is self-serve and Thrad's self-serve platform has no minimum spend. Agencies add value when you run many brands or markets, need creative volume, or have no in-house paid-media owner.

Can an agency get my ads into Gemini, Claude or Perplexity?

No. Google says there are no ads in the Gemini app, Anthropic says Claude will remain ad-free, and Perplexity phased out its ad test. Any agency promising those placements is promising something the platforms say does not exist.

Can agencies use Thrad?

Yes. Agencies manage multiple client accounts from one workspace on Thrad, with shared live reporting for clients.
