What is a publisher in advertising?
A publisher is an app or website owner that makes advertising inventory available to advertisers by displaying ads to its audience — the supply side of every advertising transaction.
What a publisher is selling
Not space. Attention, and the context that attention sits in.
That distinction determines everything about pricing. Two publishers with identical traffic can command very different prices because one has an audience in a commercially relevant frame of mind and the other does not. Volume is the least important of the three variables — context and intent do the work.
What a publisher controls
- [Inventory](/resources/glossary/inventory) definition. What is sellable, in what formats, in what positions.
- Floors, which are the primary yield lever and the most under-used.
- Demand mix, through an SSP or mediation.
- Blocklists, protecting the audience from advertisers the publisher does not want associated with.
- Frequency and density, which trade short-term revenue against the audience that produces it.
AI publishers
An AI publisher owns a surface where users ask questions rather than read pages, and the differences are structural rather than cosmetic.
Inventory is created by users in real time and cannot be expanded by producing more content. Most of it is not sellable, because most conversations have no commercial dimension. And the eligibility decision — which conversations may carry advertising at all — matters more than any pricing decision, because a badly-placed ad in a conversation damages the product rather than just the impression.
The category is also much wider than the household names. Any AI-native application where users bring a real problem is a publisher with genuinely valuable inventory, often more specific than a general assistant's.
Common questions
How does a publisher increase revenue without more traffic?
Raise floors, improve the demand mix, and improve context signalling so buyers can value the inventory properly. Adding more ad units is the obvious lever and usually the one that lowers total revenue.
Can an AI app be a publisher with modest usage?
Yes. Intent concentration matters more than volume — a small tool where most sessions are purchase decisions can out-earn a much larger casual product.
