How to Rank in ChatGPT: What OpenAI Actually Says Gets a Site Cited

OpenAI answers the question in its own help center, in one line: "Any public website can appear in ChatGPT search." Everything else it has published on the subject explains what that "can" depends on — and none of it describes a trick for ranking first.
This guide works from that documentation rather than from tip lists. It covers how ChatGPT finds and uses web content, the checks that make a site eligible, what improves the odds of being cited, how to measure the traffic, and what to do when you need to be present regardless.
Is there a way to rank first in ChatGPT?
Not in the way a page ranks first on Google. OpenAI says ChatGPT "ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information," and adds: "Placement is not guaranteed." It does not publish those factors.
Answers are also personal. If a user has memory turned on, OpenAI says ChatGPT may use saved memories when it rewrites their question into a search. Two people asking the same thing can trigger different searches and see different sources. The realistic goal is not a position but a higher chance of being found, read and cited.
How does ChatGPT find and use your content?
There are two routes, and they are controlled separately.
| Web search | Model knowledge | |
|---|---|---|
| When it is used | When current info helps | Otherwise |
| How content gets in | Search partners and crawling | Training data |
| OpenAI crawler | OAI-SearchBot | GPTBot |
| Cites your page | May, with a link | Usually not |
Web search is where citations come from. OpenAI says ChatGPT may search automatically "when your question would benefit from current information," and that it "sometimes partners with other search providers." When it does, it rewrites the user's question into one or more targeted queries. OpenAI's own example: a question about drugs that target CCR8 in cancer became a search for "CCR8 immunotherapy drug development 2025," followed by narrower follow-up queries. The providers whose privacy policies OpenAI points to include Microsoft.
Model knowledge is what ChatGPT learned in training. OpenAI's crawler documentation says GPTBot collects content that may be used to train its models, and that blocking it indicates your content should not be used for training. It is a separate control from search.
Step 1: make your site eligible
OpenAI's publisher FAQ and web search documentation give the same two requirements:
- Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. It is the crawler that lets your content appear in ChatGPT's summaries and snippets. OpenAI says sites that block it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers," though they may still appear as navigational links.
- Allow OpenAI's published IP addresses at your host or CDN. Bot protection can block OAI-SearchBot even when robots.txt allows it. OpenAI publishes the search crawler's IP ranges for allowlisting.
Two details catch people out. Blocking GPTBot does not remove you from ChatGPT search; only OAI-SearchBot does that. And a page you disallow can still surface as a bare link and title in the ChatGPT Atlas browser if OpenAI learns its URL elsewhere. To prevent that, OpenAI says to use a noindex tag — which only works if the crawler is allowed to read the page. OpenAI notes that robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to affect search results.
Step 2: be findable where ChatGPT searches
Because ChatGPT sends rewritten queries to partner search providers, a page that those providers have not indexed is harder for it to find. OpenAI does not publish how it weighs partner results against its own crawl, so treat this as practical inference, not a documented rule: the ordinary work of getting indexed still matters, and that includes Microsoft's search index as well as Google's.
The rewriting also changes what a good target looks like. The queries ChatGPT sends are specific — product names, years, technical terms — rather than the loose question a person typed. Pages that answer specific sub-questions in specific language match those queries better than a general overview does. Our comparison of GEO and SEO covers the wider version of this shift.
Step 3: write pages worth citing
OpenAI tells ChatGPT users that "search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect," and advises them to open a source, check that it supports the answer, check when it was published or updated, and prefer authoritative sources. Pages that make that check easy are the pages worth citing:
- State the answer plainly, near the top, in text rather than in an image or script.
- Show where claims come from, with links to primary sources.
- Put a visible published or updated date on the page, and keep it true.
- Use specific figures you can defend, and quote people who know the subject.
- Mark up interactive elements accessibly. OpenAI says ChatGPT's agent in Atlas reads ARIA labels and roles to understand a page.
This lines up with independent research: in the paper that named generative engine optimization, citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics improved visibility in AI answers most, while keyword stuffing often made it worse.
Step 4: measure it
- Referral traffic. OpenAI says ChatGPT automatically adds
utm_source=chatgpt.comto referral links, so visits from ChatGPT search appear under that source in Google Analytics and similar tools. - Crawler activity. Most AI crawlers never run JavaScript, so browser analytics does not see them. On our own site we measure them from server logs instead, which is how we know which AI systems are actually reading our pages.
- Answer sampling. Ask a fixed set of buyer questions on a regular schedule, with memory off, and record whether and how you are cited. Answers vary, so read the trend rather than any single run.
What if you need to be in the conversation now?
Every step above improves the odds; none guarantees a mention. OpenAI is explicit that ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers: advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter them, and ads appear separately, below the response, labelled as sponsored.
Organic visibility in AI answers is earned and never guaranteed: no one can pay to be cited. Paid placements are the part of AI visibility a brand controls, and we think most brands will need both.

A checklist
- Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and check that no page you want cited is disallowed.
- Allowlist OpenAI's published search crawler IPs in your CDN or firewall.
- Decide separately whether to allow GPTBot for training.
- Confirm key pages are indexed by the major search engines, including Microsoft's.
- Answer specific sub-questions in specific language, with sources and a visible date.
- Segment utm_source=chatgpt.com traffic in analytics and log AI crawlers server-side.
- Run a monthly answer-sampling check on the questions that matter to you.
Common questions
- Can I pay to rank in ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers and advertisers cannot shape or rank responses. You can buy ads that appear below an answer, labelled as sponsored.
- Does blocking GPTBot remove my site from ChatGPT?
No. GPTBot relates to model training. OAI-SearchBot controls whether your content appears in ChatGPT search answers.
- Does ChatGPT use Bing?
OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers, sending them rewritten queries, and it points to Microsoft's privacy statement among those providers. It does not publish how partner results are weighted.
- How long does it take ChatGPT to notice a robots.txt change?
OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its search systems to adjust.
- How do I see ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics?
ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, so visits from ChatGPT search show up under that source.
- Is ranking in ChatGPT different from ranking in Google?
The foundations overlap: crawlable, indexed, clearly written pages. ChatGPT adds its own crawler, rewrites questions into targeted searches and cites sources inside an answer rather than listing links. Our GEO vs SEO guide covers the differences.
