What is a mediation platform?

A mediation platform is the technology layer that manages and optimises ad serving across multiple ad networks, to maximise a publisher's fill rate and revenue per impression.

The problem it solves

A publisher wanting competition for their inventory needs relationships with many demand sources. Each has its own SDK, its own reporting, its own creative requirements and its own payment terms.

Integrating a dozen of those individually is a substantial and permanent engineering commitment. A mediation platform provides one SDK and one dashboard, handling the adapters, the auction and the reconciliation underneath.

What it does

  • Runs the auction, whether in-app bidding, a waterfall, or a hybrid.
  • Manages adapters for each demand source, including version upgrades.
  • Enforces floors and blocklists consistently across sources.
  • Consolidates reporting into one revenue view.
  • Handles frequency and pacing across networks that cannot see each other.

What to watch

Two things are worth scrutinising, and both are structural rather than accusations.

Conflict of interest. Most large mediation platforms also own an ad network. A platform that both runs the auction and competes in it has an incentive worth understanding, and the defence is checking whether your own reporting agrees with theirs on how often their network wins.

SDK weight. Every adapter adds size and startup cost to the app. Publishers accumulate adapters for networks that stopped contributing meaningful revenue years ago, and periodically pruning them is worth real app performance.

The third, quieter risk is dependency: mediation sits directly in the revenue path, so an outage or a bad release is an immediate revenue event rather than a degraded experience.

Common questions

Can I use more than one mediation platform?

Technically possible and generally a bad idea. Two platforms competing for the same impression create duplicate requests, inconsistent floors and reporting that cannot be reconciled.

Do I need mediation with only one network?

No. Mediation earns its overhead once you want genuine competition between sources; with a single network it adds a dependency for no gain.
