What is paid search?

Paid search is an advertising model in which marketers bid on keywords so their advertisements appear prominently within search engine results pages.

How the auction works

Advertisers bid on queries, and the auction runs each time someone searches. Position is not determined by bid alone — every major search platform combines the bid with a quality assessment of the ad and its destination.

That combination is why relevance is a cost lever rather than only a performance one: a more relevant advertisement wins better positions at lower prices, and an irrelevant one pays a premium for worse placement.

Why it works so well

Paid search captures intent at the moment it is expressed. Someone searching for a product is closer to buying than almost any other addressable audience, which is why search has consistently delivered the best measured performance in digital advertising.

It is also why the measured performance overstates the contribution. Search largely harvests demand that other activity created — a user searching for your brand by name was made aware of you somewhere else. Under last-click attribution, search collects that credit, which is the single largest distortion in most digital measurement. See attribution modeling.

What AI answers change

  • Fewer informational queries reach a results page, because the generated answer resolves them.
  • Commercial queries remain, and are where paid search retains most of its value.
  • The competitive set widens. A brand can now be recommended inside an assistant without ever appearing in a search auction.
  • Brand search becomes a lagging indicator of influence that happened in a conversation — which makes it a useful signal that AI presence is working, and a misleading channel to credit for it.

Common questions

Should I bid on my own brand terms?

It is one of the most contested questions in the discipline, and it is answerable with a holdout. Pause brand bidding in matched markets and measure total conversions — many advertisers find a substantial share was being paid for traffic that would have arrived organically.

Reduce rather than kill, and unevenly. Informational query volume is most affected; commercial intent queries continue to convert and continue to be bought.
