What is conversion rate optimization (CRO)?

Conversion rate optimization is the systematic practice of testing and improving elements of a listing, page or user flow to increase the proportion of users who convert.

What CRO actually is

Not a collection of tactics. CRO is a testing discipline: form a hypothesis about why users are not converting, change one thing, measure the effect against a control, and keep the change only if the effect is real.

The tactics that circulate as best practice — button colours, urgency messaging, form length — are hypotheses that worked somewhere else. Adopting them without testing is guessing with extra steps.

Testing properly

  • Size the test before running it. A test too small to detect the effect you care about produces a confident null and wastes the traffic.
  • Run for full business cycles. Weekday and weekend behaviour differ; a four-day test measures the days it ran.
  • Do not stop early on a good result. Peeking and stopping when significance appears is the single most common way to manufacture a false positive.
  • Test one thing, or you will not know which change caused the effect.
  • Measure the downstream outcome, not the immediate one — a change that raises signups and lowers paid conversion is a loss.

Where the wins actually are

Almost never in the elements that get tested most. Button colours and headline variants produce small effects and consume most CRO attention.

The large wins are structural: removing steps, removing required fields, removing forced account creation, making the value obvious before asking for anything, and fixing load times on mobile connections. These are harder to ship and worth an order of magnitude more.

The other reliable source is qualitative: watching people use the flow. Ten session recordings usually produce better hypotheses than a quarter of test results.

Common questions

How long should an A/B test run?

At least one full week to cover weekly cycles, and long enough to reach the sample size the effect requires. Calculate the sample size before starting rather than watching for significance.

Can I test with low traffic?

Only for large effects. With modest traffic, structural improvements guided by qualitative research usually beat a testing programme that cannot reach significance.
