What is engagement?
Engagement is any measurable user interaction with a product or an advertisement — clicks, shares, session time, in-app actions — and one of the least precise words in marketing.
Why the word is a problem
Engagement covers everything from an accidental tap to a completed purchase, which means an engagement rate is uninterpretable without knowing exactly what was counted.
It is also the metric of choice when better ones are unflattering. A campaign with poor conversion frequently gets reported on engagement instead, and the number is technically true and practically meaningless.
The useful discipline is to name the specific action rather than to use the category word. 'Engagement up 30%' should always prompt the question: which action, and does it indicate value?
Engagement that indicates value
- Actions that require intent — completing something, saving something, returning to something.
- Depth over breadth. Three meaningful actions beats thirty taps.
- Repeat behaviour, which is the strongest signal that value was actually received.
- Actions correlated with retention or revenue in your own data, which is the only test that matters.
Engagement on advertising
Ad engagement is more slippery still, because it conflates interest with accident. A meaningful share of mobile ad clicks are mis-taps, and expanding the definition to include hovers, video quartiles and dwell time increases the number without increasing the information.
On AI surfaces the problem inverts: genuine engagement frequently produces no recorded interaction at all. A user reads a recommendation, absorbs it, and acts later — real engagement, zero measured engagement.
Both cases point the same way. Measure the business outcome, and treat engagement as a diagnostic for why the outcome moved rather than as a substitute for it.
Common questions
Is engagement a vanity metric?
It becomes one when undefined. Named specifically and validated against retention or revenue, it is a useful diagnostic; reported as a category, it is decoration.
How do I measure engagement with an AI ad placement?
Direct interaction where the format has one — a sponsored follow-up taken, a card tapped. For the influence that produces no interaction, the measurement is a holdout rather than an engagement metric.
