What is a data management platform (DMP)?

A data management platform is a centralised system that collects, organises and activates audience data from multiple sources to improve ad targeting and segmentation.

What DMPs did

A DMP ingested audience data — your own, a partner's, and third-party data bought from data brokers — resolved it to identifiers, built segments, and pushed those segments to advertising platforms for targeting.

The value proposition was scale: combine what you know about your customers with third-party behavioural data, and target audiences far larger than your own customer base.

Why the model declined

The DMP was built on the third-party cookie and the mobile advertising identifier, and both were removed or gated.

Without a durable cross-site identifier, third-party audience data cannot be matched to the people you want to reach, and the segments cannot be activated. The core mechanism stopped working rather than becoming less efficient.

Regulation moved in the same direction. Purchasing behavioural data about individuals who never consented to its collection became difficult to justify under GDPR-style regimes, and enforcement has followed.

What replaced it

  • Customer data platforms, which unify first-party data you collected yourself rather than third-party data you bought.
  • [Data clean rooms](/resources/glossary/data-clean-room), for matching with a partner without either side exporting records.
  • Contextual targeting, which needs no audience data at all.
  • [Synthetic audiences](/resources/glossary/synthetic-audience) on conversational surfaces, assembled from stated intent at request time rather than from stored history.

Common questions

Is a DMP still worth buying?

Rarely as originally conceived. The capabilities that survived have largely moved into customer data platforms operating on first-party data.

What is the difference between a DMP and a CDP?

A DMP was built around anonymous third-party audience data for targeting. A CDP is built around known first-party customer data, and is usable for product and service as well as advertising.
