AEO stands for answer engine optimization: the work of getting your brand and your pages used in the answers that AI assistants and AI search features give, rather than in a list of ten links. If you searched for the stock ticker, this is the wrong page; AEO is also American Eagle Outfitters on the NYSE.
Most explanations of AEO are written by companies selling AEO. This one is built from what Google, OpenAI and Microsoft publish about how their answer engines pick sources, and from the one peer-reviewed study that tested what moves visibility. It ends with the part AEO cannot do.
What is AEO?
An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with a composed answer instead of a ranked list: Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini and Claude when they search the web. Answer engine optimization is making sure that when one of them answers a question you should be part of, it names you, cites your page, or both, and describes you accurately.
The researchers who studied this formally call these systems generative engines, which "typically satisfy queries by synthesizing information from multiple sources and summarizing them." That sentence is the whole difference from classic search. A search engine ranks pages; an answer engine reads several and writes one response. Your goal shifts from being the top result to being one of the sources the answer is built from.
AEO vs GEO vs SEO: are they different?
The label is older than ChatGPT. Marketers used "answer engine optimization" for featured snippets and voice assistants years before generative answers existed. Generative engine optimization (GEO) was named by a 2023 paper from Princeton and collaborators that tested content changes against generative answers. In 2026 the two labels describe the same work, and vendors use them interchangeably. Our GEO vs SEO guide covers the terminology; pick one label for your team and move on.
AEO vs SEO is the comparison that matters, because it decides what you actually do differently.
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in a list | Be a source in an answer |
| Unit | One page per query | Several sources per answer |
| Entry ticket | Indexed, crawlable | The same, plus AI crawlers |
| Signal of success | Rank and clicks | Mentions, citations, accuracy |
| Reporting | Search Console | Search Console, Bing, sampling |
What stays the same as SEO?
More than the industry admits. Google says of AI Overviews and AI Mode that "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary," and that "you don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features." To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. If it can rank, it can be cited.
OpenAI's position is similar: any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, provided you are not blocking its search crawler. ChatGPT "ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information," and placement is not guaranteed. The fundamentals of SEO, from crawlable pages to content worth citing, are the fundamentals of AEO.
What changes?
- Answers draw on several sources at once. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics to build a response. A page that answers one sub-question well can be cited for a question it would never have ranked for.
- Other indexes matter. OpenAI says ChatGPT search "sometimes partners with other search providers" and rewrites your question into targeted queries it sends them. Being indexed in Bing, not only Google, becomes part of the job.
- New crawlers need access. OpenAI documents that OAI-SearchBot "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features," and that sites opted out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Perplexity runs PerplexityBot. A site that blocked every AI crawler to stop training is invisible to these search features too.
- Citation replaces rank. You are either a source or you are not. Microsoft's AI Performance report is explicit that its data "reflects how often pages are cited, not page importance, ranking, or placement."
- Accuracy is a metric. An answer can mention you and get you wrong. Checking what assistants say about you is part of the work.
What does the research say works?
The GEO paper is the only controlled study of its kind so far. The authors tested nine content changes against generative answers and found that three of them, adding citations to sources, adding quotations, and adding statistics, "achieved a relative improvement of 30-40% on the Position-Adjusted Word Count metric and 15-30% on the Subjective Impression metric." Two findings matter more than the headline number:
- Keyword stuffing hurts. The authors note that tactics like keyword stuffing "traditionally used in SEO often perform worse."
- Smaller sites gain most. "Lower-ranked websites, which typically struggle for visibility, benefit significantly more from GEO." If you are not already number one, this is the opening.
The study also found that "the efficacy of these strategies varies across domains," so treat the percentages as direction, not forecast. Google's own list of best practices is plainer: "making sure that important content is available in textual form," "making sure your structured data matches the visible text on the page," and a good page experience.
How do you do AEO?
- Open the door. Allow OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Bingbot in robots.txt and at the CDN. OpenAI says it can take around 24 hours for a robots.txt change to take effect. Keep GPTBot blocked if you do not want training use; the settings are independent.
- Be indexed in Bing. Verify in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit through IndexNow, since Copilot and some ChatGPT searches draw on Microsoft's index.
- Answer the question in the first paragraph. Then support it. Bing says clear headings, tables and FAQ sections make content easier for AI systems to reference accurately.
- Add what the research rewards. Cite sources, quote them, include specific figures, and keep the keyword density you would use for a human reader.
- Cover the sub-questions. Because answers fan out, a page that handles the comparison, the cost and the how-to of one topic has more ways in than three thin pages.
- Be consistent off-site. Assistants read reviews, forums and directories as well as your site. Your name, description and facts should match everywhere.
- Check what they say about you. Ask each assistant the questions your buyers ask and read the answer text, not only whether you appear.
The ChatGPT-specific version of this list and the question of whether an llms.txt file helps are covered separately.
How do you measure AEO?
Two first-party reports exist. Google Search Console added generative AI performance reports in June 2026, showing impressions of your URLs in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover; they reached all sites worldwide on August 31, 2026. Bing Webmaster Tools has reported citations in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries since February 2026. ChatGPT tags the traffic it sends with utm_source=chatgpt.com, so referrals are easy to isolate in analytics.
For everything else, you sample: a fixed set of prompts, run on a schedule, scored for mention, citation and accuracy. Our guides to AI search visibility and AEO tools cover the method and the software.
What AEO cannot do
AEO earns organic presence, and organic presence cannot be scheduled. You cannot buy a citation in AI Mode or ChatGPT search, and even strong AEO takes time to move answers for competitive questions. For the moments where you need to be in the conversation now, the complement is paid placement inside AI conversations. Thrad lets you run one budget across the AI apps your customers already use. An AEO checklist
- Confirm OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Bingbot can fetch your key pages.
- Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and open its AI Performance report.
- Open the generative AI report in Google Search Console.
- Rewrite your top pages to answer the question first, with sources, quotes and figures.
- Align your name, description and facts across reviews, directories and forums.
- Write 25 buyer prompts and check them monthly in each assistant.
- Budget paid placement inside AI conversations for the questions you must win now.
Common questions
- What does AEO stand for?
Answer engine optimization: making your brand and pages a source in the answers given by AI assistants and AI search features such as Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Copilot. AEO is also the NYSE ticker of American Eagle Outfitters.
- What is AEO in marketing?
The practice of earning mentions and citations in AI-generated answers. It covers crawler access, content that answers questions directly with sources and figures, consistent brand facts across the web, and measuring how assistants describe you.
- What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO aims to rank a page in a list of results; AEO aims to be one of the sources an answer is built from. The technical entry ticket is the same, since Google says no special optimizations are needed, but success is measured in mentions, citations and accuracy rather than rank.
- What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
In practice nothing. AEO is the older marketing label; generative engine optimization was named by a 2023 Princeton paper. Vendors use both for the same work.
- Does AEO replace SEO?
No. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be cited in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search if it allows the search crawler. AEO adds to SEO rather than replacing it.
- What actually improves AEO?
The only controlled study, the 2023 GEO paper, found that adding citations, quotations and statistics improved visibility in generative answers by 30 to 40 percent on its main metric, while keyword stuffing often made things worse. Results varied by domain.
