Search for "AEO tools" and you get lists of ten, thirteen or nineteen products, most of them written by one of the vendors on the list. They rarely say what the numbers in those dashboards are made of, or that two of the most useful reports now come free from Google and Microsoft.

This guide sorts answer engine optimization tools by the job they do, documents where each one gets its data, and quotes published prices as of October 9, 2026. It ends with what no AEO tool can do, and the paid option that covers that gap.

What are AEO tools?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your brand named, cited and described accurately in answers from AI assistants and AI search features. If you are still deciding between the labels, our GEO vs SEO guide covers the terms. AEO tools fall into three jobs:

  • First-party reports: data from the platforms themselves on how often your pages appear or are cited. Free, authoritative, and limited to Google and Microsoft.
  • Sampled monitoring: software that asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and others a fixed set of prompts on a schedule and records whether you are mentioned, cited and how you are described. This is what most "AEO tools" sell.
  • Content and technical fixes: tools that audit pages, check crawler access and help you produce content that answer engines can use. Most of this is your existing SEO stack.

Buy in that order. Set up the free reports first, add monitoring when you need platforms the free reports do not cover, and only then look at content tooling.

Google Search Console added Search Generative AI performance reports on June 3, 2026, and says they reached all websites worldwide on August 31, 2026. They are dedicated views of your impressions within generative AI features on Search, such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, and in Discover, broken down by page, country, device and date down to the hour. The metric is impressions, defined as "how often URLs from your site appeared in generative AI features in Search and Discover." Google says it is considering "adding additional metrics over time," so do not expect click or citation data yet.

Bing Webmaster Tools has had an AI Performance report in public preview since February 10, 2026. It shows how your content appears in Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI-generated summaries, with total citations, cited pages and the grounding queries the AI used to retrieve your content. Microsoft is explicit that the data "represents a sample of overall citation activity" and that it "reflects how often pages are cited, not page importance, ranking, or placement."

Your own logs show which AI crawlers fetch your pages. OpenAI documents that OAI-SearchBot "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features," separate from GPTBot, which is for training. A page OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot never requests is unlikely to be cited, and browser analytics never sees these requests.

HubSpot offers a free AEO Grader that scores a brand out of 100 across GPT-5.4 mini, Perplexity and Gemini, and its AEO product lets you "track 25 prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini for free" before the paid tier.

How do AEO tools get their data?

This is the question most tool lists skip, and it decides what the dashboards are worth. With a few exceptions, monitoring tools do not have access to what real users ask an assistant. They run prompts you choose, or prompts they suggest, on a schedule, and record the answers.

  • The prompts are a sample you define. Ahrefs says of Brand Radar that "each prompt is checked daily on every selected platform." HubSpot updates its visibility score daily from the prompts you set up. Change the prompt set and the score changes.
  • Suggested prompts come from search data, not chat data. Profound's own comparison notes that "Brand Radar's prompts come from People Also Ask questions and Ahrefs' keyword index rather than real AI conversations." Semrush's prompt research and Ahrefs' AI Visibility Index model prompts on keyword databases.
  • Conversation-volume claims are not documented. Profound says its prompt volumes "analyze billions of real user conversations" but does not publish where those conversations come from or how they are sampled. Treat such figures as estimates until a vendor shows its method.
  • Answers vary between runs. The same prompt can return different brands on different days. A daily or weekly refresh is a trend line, not a ranking.

None of this makes monitoring useless. It makes it a survey: valuable when the prompt set reflects what your buyers ask, and when you read movement over weeks rather than a single score. Our AI search visibility guide covers how to build that prompt set.

Which paid AEO monitoring tools should you compare?

  • HubSpot AEO costs $50 a month, or $45 billed annually, after the free 25-prompt trial. It reports a visibility score, prompt tracking, citation analysis and prioritized recommendations across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. The cheapest way to get daily monitoring across the three biggest assistants.
  • Ahrefs Brand Radar starts at €47 a month for custom prompts, free with any paid Ahrefs Lite plan or higher, with tiers from 5 prompts and 150 checks a month. It covers AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini and ChatGPT, with Claude available at a higher cost per check. Its AI Visibility Index, modeled on a large prompt set from Ahrefs' keyword data, starts at €179 a month.
  • Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit is $99 a month with 25 tracked prompts, 50 more for $60 a month. Prompt tracking updates daily and covers Google AI Mode and ChatGPT; brand performance updates weekly. Prompt tracking is currently available for prompts in the United States.
  • Peec AI tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini with visibility, position and sentiment, and offers a free trial. Pricing is on a separate page.
  • Profound covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, DeepSeek and Google AI Overviews, adds bot analytics and content agents, and sells through demos. It is the enterprise end of the market.

Other tools you will see on lists include Otterly, Scrunch, AthenaHQ, Evertune, Goodie AI, Conductor and BrightEdge. Apply the same questions to each: which platforms, how many prompts, how often, and where the prompts come from.

What features matter in an AEO tool?

  • Platform coverage you actually need. Google AI features and Copilot are reported free. Pay for ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude coverage.
  • Prompts and refresh rate. Price per tracked prompt per day is the real unit. Twenty-five prompts is enough to start; a category with many buyer questions needs more.
  • Citations, not just mentions. A mention is your name in the answer; a citation is a link to your page. Tools that separate the two tell you whether your content or your reputation is doing the work.
  • Sentiment and accuracy. How the answer describes you matters as much as whether it does. Look for the actual answer text, not only a score.
  • Competitor share of voice. The useful question is who the assistant recommends instead of you.
  • Export or API. The data should land next to your Search Console and rank tracking, not in a seventh dashboard.

Do you need content or technical AEO tools?

Mostly not. Google says that "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary," and that "you don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features." For Google, your SEO stack is your AEO stack.

For other assistants, the technical checklist is short and needs no new software:

  • Allow the search crawlers in robots.txt. OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot; our guide to ranking in ChatGPT covers the rest.
  • Submit URLs through IndexNow so Bing and Copilot see updates quickly.
  • Write pages that answer one question clearly, with headings, tables and FAQs that an answer engine can lift.
  • Decide on an llms.txt file knowing that no major assistant has documented reading it.

AEO tool or AEO agency?

A monitoring subscription tells you where you stand. It does not write the pages, earn the mentions on Reddit and review sites that assistants draw on, or fix crawler access. If your team already does SEO, a tool plus the free reports is enough. If nobody owns the work, an agency will cost more than the tool but actually change the answers. Either way, ask them to show you the prompt set and the data source before you sign.

What AEO tools cannot do

Every tool above measures organic visibility: whether an assistant chooses to mention you. You cannot buy that placement, and even a good AEO programme takes months to move it. For the questions where you need to be present now, the complement is paid placement inside AI conversations. Thrad lets you run one budget across the AI apps your customers already use. An AEO tools checklist

  1. Open the generative AI report in Search Console and the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools before buying anything.
  2. Pull a month of server logs and count requests from OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ChatGPT-User.
  3. Write 25 prompts your buyers actually ask, across category, comparison, problem and brand questions.
  4. Run the free HubSpot trial or Ahrefs custom prompts against that set for four weeks.
  5. Pay for a tool only for the platforms the free reports miss, and judge it on citations and answer text, not a composite score.
  6. Budget the paid complement separately: ads inside AI conversations for the prompts you must win today.

Common questions

What are AEO tools?

Software that measures and improves how a brand appears in AI-generated answers. The three kinds are first-party reports from Google and Microsoft, monitoring tools that sample assistants with a fixed prompt set, and content or technical tools, most of which are ordinary SEO software.

Are there free AEO tools?

Yes. Google Search Console's generative AI performance reports, Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report, your own server logs, HubSpot's AEO Grader and HubSpot's 25-prompt free tier all cost nothing as of October 2026.

How do AEO tools get their data?

Most run a prompt set you define on a daily or weekly schedule and record whether you are mentioned or cited. Suggested prompts usually come from search keyword data. Claims about real conversation volumes are generally not documented by the vendor.

Do I need an AEO tool if I already use Semrush or Ahrefs?

Both now include AI visibility features: Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit at $99 a month and Ahrefs Brand Radar, which is free with paid Ahrefs Lite plans and up. Check those before adding a separate subscription.

What is the difference between AEO tools and GEO tools?

Nothing consistent. Vendors use answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization for the same monitoring and content products. Compare on platforms, prompts, refresh rate and data source rather than on the label.

How many prompts should I track?

Start with about 25 that your buyers actually ask, spread across category, comparison, problem and brand questions. Add more once you know which ones move, since most tools price by prompt.
