For twenty years, "are we visible?" had a number behind it: a ranking, a share of clicks, a line in a rank tracker. Ask the same question about AI answers and most teams guess, because there is no single report that tells you how often an assistant names your brand.

There is more real data than most people think, though. Microsoft now reports AI citations directly, Google counts AI-feature traffic, and ChatGPT tags the visits it sends. This guide maps those sources, then sets out a sampling method to fill the gaps, a simple way to score the results, and what to fix when you are missing.

What is AI search visibility?

AI search visibility is how often, and how well, your brand appears in answers generated by AI assistants and AI search features. It has four parts:

  • Presence: whether you are mentioned at all when someone asks a question you should be part of.
  • Citation: whether one of your pages is linked as a source.
  • Prominence: where you appear — first recommendation or fifth — and how much of the answer draws on you.
  • Accuracy: whether what the answer says about you is true and current.

Researchers measure the same idea. The paper that named generative engine optimization scored visibility two ways: how much of an answer was drawn from a source, weighted by its position, and how that source came across to a reader. Both matter. A citation buried at the end of a long answer does less than a brand recommended in the first line.

What can you measure directly?

Bing Webmaster Tools is the closest thing to a Search Console for AI. Its AI Performance report, in public preview since February 2026, shows how often your pages are cited as sources in Microsoft Copilot, Bing's AI-generated summaries and some partner integrations. It reports total citations, the average number of your pages cited per day, citations by page, and grounding queries — the phrases the AI used when it retrieved your content. Microsoft is careful to say these figures reflect how often pages are cited, not their ranking or placement within an answer.

Google Search Console counts traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside its overall Web search figures. You cannot separate it out, but the clicks and impressions are there, and Google says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality.

Analytics referrals show visits from assistants that link to sources. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends, so that traffic is easy to isolate. Treat other assistants' referring domains as their own channel too.

Server or CDN logs show which AI crawlers are fetching your pages. Browser analytics only records visitors that run its script, so crawler requests show up in logs rather than in your analytics. A page that search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot never request is unlikely to be cited.

How do you sample AI answers?

First-party data covers part of the picture. For the rest — whether ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini mention you — you have to ask them. Done casually, this produces anecdotes. Done consistently, it produces a trend.

  • Write a fixed prompt set. A few dozen questions your buyers actually ask, across four types: category ("best payroll software for a 50-person company"), comparison ("X vs Y"), problem ("how do I cut payroll errors") and brand ("is X good for small teams").
  • Use buyer language, not yours. Pull phrasing from sales calls, support tickets and search queries — including Bing's grounding queries.
  • Control the conditions. Use the same wording, the same location and a clean session each time. OpenAI notes that ChatGPT may use saved memories when it rewrites a search, so a logged-in, memory-on account will skew results.
  • Cover the assistants your buyers use, not every assistant that exists.
  • Repeat on a schedule — monthly is enough for most brands — and keep the prompt set stable so runs are comparable.

Answers vary from one run to the next, even with identical prompts. That is why the method matters more than any single result: you are measuring a rate over many questions, not a position for one.

How do you score the results?

Record the same fields for every prompt and assistant, then roll them up:

  • Mention rate: the share of prompts where your brand appears.
  • Citation rate: the share where one of your pages is linked.
  • Average position: where you appear in list-style answers.
  • Accuracy issues: answers that get your pricing, features or category wrong.
  • Share of voice: your mention rate against each competitor's on the same prompts.
  • Sources cited: which third-party pages the assistant relies on when it answers your category's questions.

The last field is the most actionable. If an assistant keeps citing the same review site, comparison article or forum thread when it recommends competitors, those pages shape the answer — and being accurately represented on them can matter as much as your own site.

How do you fix visibility gaps?

  • Open the door to crawlers. Allow the search crawlers you want — OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, PerplexityBot for Perplexity, Googlebot and Bingbot — and check that your firewall is not blocking them. Perplexity's crawler documentation includes firewall rules for exactly this.
  • Keep pages fresh in the index. Microsoft recommends IndexNow to notify participating search engines when content changes, so AI answers reference the current version.
  • Make pages easy to quote. Microsoft points to clear headings, tables and FAQ sections; the GEO research found that cited sources, quotations and statistics improved visibility most.
  • Correct the record. Where answers are wrong, update your own pages first, then the third-party sources the assistants cite.
  • Answer the questions you are missing from. Prompts where competitors appear and you do not are a content plan.

Where do paid placements fit?

Every fix above improves the odds of being mentioned; none guarantees it. Assistants decide what to cite, and OpenAI states that ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers.

Organic visibility in AI answers is earned and never guaranteed: no one can pay to be cited. Paid placements are the part of AI visibility a brand controls, and we think most brands will need both. A visibility audit shows you exactly which conversations you are missing from — the same conversations a paid placement can cover while organic visibility builds.

A visibility audit checklist

  1. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and review the AI Performance report.
  2. Segment AI-assistant referral traffic in analytics, including utm_source=chatgpt.com.
  3. Check server or CDN logs for the AI search crawlers you want, and allow them in robots.txt and your firewall.
  4. Write a fixed prompt set in buyer language across category, comparison, problem and brand questions.
  5. Run it monthly in a clean session on the assistants your buyers use, and record mention, citation, position and accuracy.
  6. Track share of voice against competitors and list the sources assistants cite.
  7. Turn the prompts you are missing from into content and paid coverage.

Common questions

What is AI search visibility?

How often and how well a brand appears in answers from AI assistants and AI search features: whether it is mentioned, cited as a source, recommended prominently and described accurately.

Is there a Search Console for AI answers?

The closest is the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools, which shows citations of your pages in Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, along with grounding queries. Google Search Console includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in its Web figures without separating it.

What are grounding queries?

In Bing's AI Performance report, grounding queries are the key phrases the AI used when retrieving content that was then cited in an answer. Microsoft notes they are a sample of overall citation activity.

How do I check whether ChatGPT mentions my brand?

Run a fixed set of buyer questions on a regular schedule in a clean session, and record whether you are mentioned or cited. For traffic, filter analytics for utm_source=chatgpt.com, which ChatGPT adds to the links it sends.

Do AI visibility tools give accurate results?

Most automate the sampling method described here. Results depend on which assistants, locations, prompts and settings a tool uses, so check those before comparing tools or trusting a single score.

Can you pay to improve AI visibility?

Not within the answers themselves. OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers. Paid placements appear separately, alongside the conversation, and are labelled as sponsored.
