If you have run a search campaign and judged it by what it sold, you have done performance marketing. It is advertising bought and judged on a measurable action: a click, a lead, an install, a sale. The advertiser picks the action, the platform optimizes toward it, and every dollar is held to a cost per result. Brand marketing works the other way, paying for attention now and expecting the return later.
Most digital advertising is now bought this way. Search and social alone took $231.9 billion of the $294.6 billion that US advertisers spent online in 2025, according to the IAB and PwC, and nearly all of it was optimized toward an action.
What is performance marketing?
The IAB's definition rests on intent and measurement. A campaign counts as performance marketing when "the intention of the campaign is to drive consumer action, as opposed to raise awareness" and when "the cause and effect between the advertising and consumer action can be clearly measured." Paying per action is common but, the IAB notes, "not necessarily required." A Facebook campaign bought on CPM and optimized for purchases is performance marketing; a CPC banner bought for reach is not.
| Performance marketing | Brand marketing | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | An action now | Memory and preference later |
| Paid on | Clicks, leads, sales | Impressions, sponsorships |
| Judged by | Cost per result, ROAS | Awareness, share of search |
| Time horizon | Days to weeks | Months to years |
Performance marketing pricing models
| Model | You pay for | Common on |
|---|---|---|
| CPC | Each click | Search, social, AI ads |
| CPM | 1,000 impressions | Social, video, display |
| CPA | Each conversion | Search, affiliate |
| CPL | Each lead | LinkedIn, lead gen |
| CPI | Each app install | App campaigns |
| Revenue share | A % of each sale | Affiliate |
Most platforms now separate what you pay for from what you optimize for. Google's Target CPA lets you "set your desired average cost per conversion" while billing per click; Meta bills mostly on impressions while optimizing for whatever event you choose. In affiliate marketing, commission is "either a percentage of the sale value or a fixed amount", which is the purest form of paying only for results.
Performance marketing channels
| Channel | US size | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Social | $117.7B in 2025, +32.6% | IAB and PwC |
| Search | $114.2B in 2025, +11% | IAB and PwC |
| Video incl. CTV | $78B in 2025, +25.4% | IAB and PwC |
| Retail media | $69.3B forecast for 2026 | EMARKETER |
| Affiliate | $13.6B in 2024 | PMA |
| AI conversations | $1B run rate (company-stated) | OpenAI |
- Search captures demand someone has already expressed. It is the most mature performance channel, but social overtook it in 2025 as search growth slowed to 11 percent, according to the IAB and PwC.
- Social creates demand by predicting who will want something. It grew fastest of the major channels in 2025, at 32.6 percent.
- Retail and commerce media sell placements on retailer sites and apps, targeted with purchase data. EMARKETER expects US retail media to reach $69.33 billion in 2026.
- Affiliate pays partners a commission per sale. The Performance Marketing Association measured US spend at $13.62 billion in 2024, up 49.8 percent in three years.
- Video and CTV are increasingly bought on outcomes rather than reach; the IAB's 2026 outlook expects CTV spend to grow 13.8 percent this year.
- AI conversations are the newest. OpenAI said ads in ChatGPT reached a $1 billion annualized run rate in under 200 days and that "CPC and outcome-optimized bidding now account for the majority of campaigns." A run rate is a recent month multiplied by twelve, not a year of booked revenue, but the bidding mix shows how advertisers are using it: as a performance channel.
Our comparison of digital advertising platforms covers the platforms behind each channel, with their reach, pricing and minimum budgets.
Performance marketing metrics and benchmarks
Five numbers run every performance program: click-through rate, cost per click, conversion rate, cost per acquisition or lead, and return on ad spend. Published benchmarks give a starting point:
| Metric | Google Ads search | Meta lead ads |
|---|---|---|
| Click-through rate | 6.64% | 2.70% |
| Cost per click | $5.42 | $1.80 |
| Conversion rate | 8.18% | 8.54% |
| Cost per lead | $66.69 | $27.39 |
The Google figures come from WordStream's analysis of 13,474 US search campaigns between April 2025 and March 2026; the Meta figures from its Facebook benchmarks for lead campaigns. What they show is the middle of the market. What they cannot show is whether a campaign is profitable: a $66 lead is cheap for a mortgage broker and ruinous for a dog groomer. Your own cost per acquisition against your own margin is the only benchmark that decides whether a campaign should scale.
How measurement works in 2026
Performance marketing only works if you can connect an ad to the action it caused. For a decade that connection was a cookie or a device ID passed from the ad to the checkout. Two changes weakened it, and two methods filled the gap:
- Apps lost default tracking. Since iOS 14.5, apps must use AppTrackingTransparency to ask permission before tracking. AppsFlyer reported in 2025 that 50 percent of users globally now consent.
- Third-party cookies stayed in Chrome. In April 2025 Google said it would "maintain our current approach to offering users third-party cookie choice", and in October 2025 it retired most Privacy Sandbox technologies, including the Attribution Reporting API.
- Modeling came back. Google made its open-source marketing mix model, Meridian, available to everyone in January 2025; Meta maintains Robyn.
- Incrementality became standard. Google Conversion Lift and Meta lift studies hold out a randomized control group to measure what the ads actually caused.
In practice, a 2026 measurement stack has three layers: platform attribution for daily optimization, your own analytics as the referee across platforms, and lift tests or a mix model to check that the platforms are not claiming sales that would have happened anyway. Our guide to measuring ads in AI assistants applies the same layers to the newest channel.

Book a callAutomation: the platforms now run the campaign
The biggest change in performance marketing is that targeting, bidding and creative assembly have moved into the platforms. Google's Performance Max is "a goal-based campaign type that allows you to access all Google Ads inventory" from one campaign, and AI Max brings the same automation to Search. Meta's Advantage+ does it on Facebook and Instagram; Meta said on its second-quarter 2026 call that Advantage+ end-to-end solutions reached "over $75 billion in annual revenue run-rate."
The work that remains is the work automation cannot do: choosing the conversion event that matches real value, feeding the platform clean conversion data, supplying enough creative for it to test, and deciding how much budget each channel deserves.
How much should go to performance?
The best-known guidance warns against putting everything there. The IPA's work by Les Binet and Peter Field found "the optimum budget ratio was 60:40 between brand building and activation". LinkedIn's B2B Institute adds that "the majority of your customers are out-market at any given time", which is the 95-5 rule: at any moment only a small share of buyers is ready to buy. Budgets are concentrating at both ends of the funnel instead: Gartner reported in June 2026 that "awareness and conversion now account for 62.6% of total media spend", up more than 10 percent since 2024.
Consider a team that moves its whole budget into automated performance campaigns because they report the best return. The choice assumes the sales those campaigns claim would not have happened without them, and that next year's buyers will arrive regardless. Lift tests check the first assumption. Brand spend is the hedge against the second. Run performance channels to harvest demand, measure them hard, and keep enough brand investment that there is demand to harvest next year.
Performance marketing examples
- Samsung Electronics, Google. Adding Performance Max to Display and Discovery campaigns in a five-week test in Korea produced "2.5X conversions, -60% cost per conversion, and 2X click through rate", according to Google.
- Macmillan Cancer Support, Meta. An A/B test of Advantage+ sales campaigns against business as usual cut cost per result by 29 percent and returned 1.4 times the value per pound, according to Meta.
- BBVA Mexico, Microsoft Advertising. Between October 2024 and January 2025 the bank reported a 40 percent increase in conversions and a 45 percent lower cost per acquisition, per Microsoft.
All three are platform-published case studies, so the methodology is the platform's own. The pattern is still useful: each one is a controlled comparison against what the advertiser was doing before, which is how any performance change should be judged.
A performance marketing strategy in six steps
- Define the one action that matters and its value, and make sure every platform tracks the same event.
- Set a target cost per acquisition from your margin, not from benchmarks.
- Start with the channel closest to stated demand, usually search, then add channels that create demand.
- Give automated campaigns clean conversion data and enough creative, and let them learn before judging them.
- Referee across platforms with your own analytics, and confirm with lift tests or a mix model at least twice a year.
- Keep 10 to 15 percent of budget for testing new channels against a holdout, and scale only what beats the channel it replaced.
The newest performance channel: AI conversations
Every performance channel is built on a signal of intent. Search reads a few typed words; social infers interest from behavior. An AI conversation states the need in full: what someone wants, for whom, under what budget, and what they already tried. Ads matched to that conversation, labeled as sponsored and shown beside the answer, reach people at the point of decision, and they are bought the way performance media is bought. Our AI advertising platform guide maps the sellers, and our programmatic explainer covers how the auctions work.
Thrad is a DSP for ads inside AI conversations: advertisers bid on conversational intent in real time, with delivery in under 500 milliseconds, across 20+ countries, with one budget and one report across every AI app. Campaigns launch from the self-serve platform with CPC or CPM pricing, full control, and no minimum spend, which makes it a clean test for the 10 to 15 percent of budget in step six. Launch a campaign from self-serve.
Common questions
- What is performance marketing?
Advertising bought and judged on measurable actions such as clicks, leads, installs or sales. The IAB defines it by intent to drive action, measurable cause and effect, and optimization toward that action; paying per action is common but not required.
- What is the difference between performance marketing and brand marketing?
Performance marketing pays for and measures immediate actions and is judged on cost per result. Brand marketing builds memory and preference over months and is judged on awareness and long-term sales. The IPA found a 60:40 split between brand and activation works best on average.
- What are performance marketing channels?
Search, social, retail and commerce media, affiliate, video and connected TV bought on outcomes, and, since 2026, ads inside AI conversations. In the US, social and search each took about $115 billion in 2025.
- What metrics matter in performance marketing?
Click-through rate, cost per click, conversion rate, cost per acquisition or lead, and return on ad spend. WordStream's 2026 Google Ads medians are a 6.64 percent CTR, $5.42 CPC, 8.18 percent conversion rate and $66.69 cost per lead.
- How is performance marketing measured without third-party cookies?
Chrome kept third-party cookies, but measurement now combines platform attribution, your own analytics, incrementality tests such as Google Conversion Lift and Meta lift studies, and marketing mix models such as Google Meridian and Meta Robyn.
- What is a performance marketing agency?
An agency that plans, buys and optimizes campaigns against a cost-per-result target, usually across search, social and affiliate, and is judged on those results.
