The Drum: Thrad launches $1 million fund for the next generation of advertising
Thrad has announced Monetization Fund II, a rolling programme that commits up to $1 million in advertiser spend to eligible consumer AI applications and publishers through Thrad's DSP. The fund lets AI apps and services with a built-in conversational interface test advertising as a sustainable business model, with real campaigns from the brands and agencies already buying on Thrad.
As consumer AI applications grow, users expect longer, more context-rich conversations and features that handle complex, multi-step tasks, and every interaction carries a token cost. Advertising offers a way to offset those costs while keeping AI products accessible and leaving developers free to invest in the features users value.
“AI founders are building incredibly useful apps, from personal AI agents to interactive learning tutors,” said Andrea Tortella, co-founder and CEO of Thrad. “But as these services scale, costs add up quickly, and many users simply won't pay for a subscription. Monetization Fund II connects AI developers with advertising demand from Fortune 500 brands, helping them test or adopt an ad-supported business model.”
Through Thrad, consumer AI apps connect their conversational inventory to contextually relevant campaigns, run native sponsored experiences inside the chat interface, and measure delivery and engagement. Sponsored placements complement the conversation, with clear disclosure so users can tell advertising from the AI's own responses.
The programme builds on Thrad's first monetization fund, launched in December 2025 with $500,000 in advertiser spend. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and Thrad evaluates each app on its potential to generate advertising revenue, including whether it has an established user base. Eligibility, ad formats, revenue sharing and measurement are set out at thrad.ai/monetizationfund.
The Drum ran the announcement on 16 October 2026, alongside comment from Daimon co-founder Andrea Zanon on the quality of the advertiser demand Thrad brings to conversational environments, and from Mod Op CTO Tessa Burg on how brands can take part in AI conversations in ways that are useful to their customers.
